Working in partnership with developers Discovery Properties, Rider Levett Bucknall has won a key role in the construction of an imaginative new three-storey retail shopping and leisure development in the heart of the historic market town of Darlington.
The Oval shopping centre, which will link with the town's existing Queen Street shopping centre, is expected to provide a major new department store and many large shop units as well as a multiplex cinema, extensive leisure facilities, five restaurants and a nightclub. The 394,000 sq ft Oval complex will also house the Winter Garden, a public exhibition space for the town.
An 850-space multi-storey car park will be linked to the retail mall by a footbridge of an unusually creative design across the existing inner ring road. Both practical and artistic in its design, the footbridge's curved lines, tasteful feature lighting and high architectural values will add considerably to the character of Darlington's town centre.
RLB was appointed by Discovery in March to provide Project and Cost Management services for this project, work on which is expected to start soon with The Oval due to open in 2010.
Matthew Brooker, a partner in Rider Levett Bucknall's London office, who is leading this project for RLB, is impressed with the way a difficult task is being addressed. He says:
"Discovery Properties have pulled together a very strong team committed to the success of this project. Architects Lyon Sleeman Hoare and Cundalls Engineers have significant experience in the retail sector. Together with Rider Levett Bucknall they are addressing the exacting requirements of the site, design and tenants."
Hugo Hawkings, Chief Executive Officer of Discovery Properties, adds:
"This scheme is progressing very well. Relationships are extremely positive and we expect to be on site early in the new year."
