RLB Wins Museum Contract

QS week, 02/11/07

Rider Levett Bucknall has been appointed QS on a £6.6 million project to build a new museum in Chichester.

Architects Keith Williams Associates are designing the museum, with Nigel Rippon of Robinson Low Francis working as project manager.

Other team members include building services engineer Gifford and Partner and structural engineer, Techniker.

Chichester District Council is building the new museum on the site of the city's Roman Baths, with the excavated archaeological remains forming the focus of the building's foyer.

RLB beat stiff competition to win the contract for the building in Tower Street, which will include extensive display areas, storage for non-archaeological collections, public facilities, education and resource spaces and a shop.

Sustainability is a key objective of the scheme, so, where possible, the museum will use on-site renewable sources such as photovoltaic cells on the roof and ground-source boreholes for both heating and cooling.

Work is due to start in September 2008 with an estimated completion date of March 2010.
